Nawin Gupta Named Journals Manager for The University of Chicago Press

Chicago

Education, Not For Profit

I am very pleased to announce that Nawin Gupta will join the Press as Journals Manager on July 15th.  Nawin will serve on the General Management Committee and will represent the Journals Division in working with senior managers throughout the Press as well as with executives and editors at society- and Press-owned journals. Nawin's extensive publishing career combines experience in corporate, academic, and association environments and responsibility for operations, sales, marketing, circulation, custom publishing, manufacturing, distribution, fulfillment and customer support services. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the University of Iowa (1977) and worked for three years as Managing Editor at the University of Iowa Department of Publications.  He subsequently held positions at the American Bar Association and at First Impression Printers and Lithographers.  In the late 1980s, Nawin joined the American Medical Association in Chicago where he served as Director, Publishing Operations Division, from 1991 to 1995.  He worked at Reed Elsevier Companies for six years as Vice President, Reed Travel Group, and as Senior Vice President, OAG Worldwide. In 2002, Nawin returned to the American Medical Association where he has been responsible for the Periodical Publishing business, which includes the highly respected Journal of the American Medical Association and the nine Archives journals, all of which are peer reviewed, and the weekly American Medical News.  Over the past three years, Nawin's group developed new products and services, expanded online and international publishing activities, and led a turnaround resulting in increased revenues and margins. Nawin serves on the executive committee of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the Association of American Publishers and on the executive board of the International Association of STM Publishers.  He looks forward to returning to Hyde Park and to leading the Journals Division at a time of great challenge and opportunity for technically sophisticated nonprofit publishers.
